SEE SHIPPING POLICY BELOW. In its day, this large-capacity wardrobe-style
suitcase would have been the cats pajamas. Patented in 1935 by Atlantic
Products of Trenton, NJ, this heavy canvas garment bag with leather trim was
the "bag that looks better, holds more, weighs less, and keeps garments wrinkle
free and ready to wear," according to a 1941 Life Magazine ad. The ad also
proclaims that it was the "first bag especially designed for auto travel," as
once packed it could be folded in half, carried out to the car, then opened and
laid flat so "your suits travel spread out full length." It came in several
colors in "hardy, waterproof luggage canvas with smart plaid lining and London
tan top grain leather trim." The bag offered here looks exactly like the one in
the ad (see last photo, bottom left), and includes two travel tags, one from
American Export Lines for the S. S. Constitution departing on August 11, 1954,
from New York to Naples, Italy, and another from Eastern Airlines to Mexico
City (date unknown). There are stickers from a hotel in Florence and Mexican
customs on the outside of the suitcase. Inside there are tickets from the
laundry company in Rome, GA, actually owned by the suitcase's original owner,
as well as a bar of soap from a hotel in Mexico and a luggage tag from Air
France--a few clues to create a story. The bag has double leather-covered
handles, two leather straps, a tongue-style closure, and five metal feet.

The exterior of the bag, including the middle folded area, is in very good
antique condition. The interior includes three original metal clothes hangers
and all the original compartments. All zippers (larger ones marked "Talon") are
in very good, working condition. The snap closures have leather tabs, but some
of the snaps have become detached from the fabric flap; however, all the pieces
are present. The lining is stained from age rather than spillage, and the
bottom compartment has a fairly large hole; it could be patched or the
compartment removed entirely if so desired. The leather throughout is in
remarkably good condition; there are a couple of cracks on one of the leather
handles, but because the framework is sturdy metal, the handles are secure. The
two straps have some surface cracking and care should be taken when securing
the buckles. The leather corners at the bottom are scuffed (please review all
photos). All the leather will benefit from regular conditioning. The hardware
is heavy and appears to be brass plated. Very minimal musty odor.

Overall Measurements:
CLOSED: 23 1/4 in. wide at the bottom; 20 1/2 in. wide at the top; 10 3/4 in.
thick at the bottom; 9 1/2 in. thick at the top; 16 in. from top to bottom with
handles folded down.
OPEN: 38 3/4 in. long (excluding hanging hook) x 23 in. wide x 4 3/4 in. thick.
